To My Children

Dec 9, 12:15 PM

Tis is one I wrote one afternoon during a period when I was having some difficult times with some of my kids.

You wonder if I really care
because at times
you didn’t see me there

Did you never think it neat
that you always
had a place to sleep and eat

While others slept in cars
or lived in parks
you always had a grassy yard

While other children’s mothers labored
away from home
with your mothers time you were always favored

If you were to stop and consider
all these things and more
perhaps you would not be so bitter

When you were small I always took your hand
so that on your own
and with a little help you could stand

You could never see
the tears that flowed
when at times I couldn’t with you be

Because of wants and needs to be earned
so that the family
could be provised and from their shelter, not turned

You could never see my broken heart
when my attempts
to turn you from error you would thwart

Nor do you know the hours I’ve spent really frightened
asking, no begging
the Lord your mind to enlighten

You say you wonder if I care
if I didn’t
do you think my life with you I’d share

To all your siblings and to you
all I can say
is that I love you, I really do.
